First post for the new year, and something new. I have recently been working on a Baldwin Steam Tram Motor in N scale, the chassis, which I initially had a go at in printed circuit board turned out to be a bit of a failure, so I reverted to my usual methods of using brass with bearings and whipper pickups made from Phosphor Bronze. A Caramel N motor is used with gears from a Life Like switcher bogie used to transmit motion to drive a single axle with side rods being used to transfer power to the other set of wheels.<br />

3229 was inspired by a photograph in Train Hobby Publication's book "Central - The Steam Station" and the tender is fairly unusual in that the hungry boards are flush with the tender sides. Archer Fine Transfers form the rivet detail and the motor is mounted in the tender with a shaft across to the engine.</div>

I have sprayed my pair of 32s, 3214 and 3390 (not shown) once a bit of time is allowed for the paint to cure I will begin final assembly and testing. Tamiya flat black was used, Testors Gloss coat applied prior to fixing decals and Dullcoat was used to finish. 3214 has a little bit of red along the footplate to jazz it up a little. It was very tempting to spray one of them Crimson like 3265 is at the moment. </div>

The rivets have been added to the pair of 32s and they are just about ready for paint. The rivets are Archer Fine Transfers decals, available in N scale in various sizes and have been applied straight onto the bare metal. I think they are quite effective at representing the lines which are very hard to replicate by pressing in this scale, lest you distort the rest of the panel you are trying to press rivets into. </div>

I have also made a few guards vans lately from scratch out of styrene using layers laminated together with the windows being drilled and cut with a knife prior to laminating. It worked fairly well I think, windows are Mircoscale Krystal Klear and there is a passenger in the LHG (upper photo) for added interest. In the lower van it was difficult to get the bogies to swing without fouling the underframe wire detail so some of it got cut.<br />

First up, a project that has been sitting on and off the back burner for a while. Locomotive Number 1, with Fleischmann wheels on the loco and Kato GS4 spare part wheels on the tender I have made up the tender sides and soldered them on to a piece of PCB so that the body is insulated from the chassis. The footplate base (1st layer) has been cut out for the loco out of nickel silver. Plenty more work to be done.</div>

The pair of 32s have had their chimneys and domes turned up and attached to their boilers and handrails added. I need to get some more wheels prior to making up pony trucks and now the detailing begins!</div>

Next up is a project I have wanted to start for years, a 73 class shunter. Following ill fated bidding on an old kit on ebay I bit the bullet - build it myself and to proper bogie spacing so a Life Like switcher has donated its bogies and a piece of PCB cut out to frame them as a chassis. A Badger motor provides power.</div>

Here is the completed chassis. Phosphor Bronze wipers have been soldered on to provide some suspension and power pickup and the thing runs quite nicely considering it hasn't had any ballast added to it.</div>

My pair of 32 Class locos are starting to come together with the boilers attached to the footplates + cabs. The beauty of doing locomotives in pairs is that you get more bang for your buck - making things in pairs instead of doing 1 then doing another later means that you have all your measurements to mark out without having to calculate them again from plans. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Months go by and I do a bit here, and there on the loco that has sat on my workbench for quite some time now. The following photos show progress made on the body and the construction of the tender. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-Du1hRWPG2HnYamn48maYLjwCL9PMKKdX15idopOXuXPRkZt0bB80F-EHpoYqHHK2tLUofFpS-8kaGUwQSlyliRy3rsVoDA9t9YOxeUbdqJ6-LP-DH8IP27gvYCTZBvfaCKO0IM25z9g/s1600/IMG_0824.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-Du1hRWPG2HnYamn48maYLjwCL9PMKKdX15idopOXuXPRkZt0bB80F-EHpoYqHHK2tLUofFpS-8kaGUwQSlyliRy3rsVoDA9t9YOxeUbdqJ6-LP-DH8IP27gvYCTZBvfaCKO0IM25z9g/s320/IMG_0824.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The body is almost ready for final detailing, a drawbar needs to be fashioned to join the tender and engine. Pickups need to be fitted to the engine, but in a cool stroke of God's grace the engine has taken its first steps under its own power with pickups fitted to the tender. The piano wire link between tender and engine works! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Quatering was carried out by eye and was fairly easy to achieve. I have found that the use of a 'stiff' gearbox to hold a wheel in place, the one that all the rest are quartered in relation to really helps. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Finding appropriate sideframes for the tender bogies was a bit tricky...however a Bachmann 4-4-0 old timer tender chassis proved to have an answer... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The horrible small 'wheels' ( I say wheels because they skid) were removed and new axle points drilled with Gopher Models wheels fitted. Wheels can be bought from <a href="http://www.badgerbits.com.au/">http://www.badgerbits.com.au/</a></div>
<br />

After the wheels and base of the tender had been sorted out, from brass and PCB the sides were looked at....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Brass formed the solution and care was necessary in marking out the various 'landmark' sections, as the sides were to be formed and bent from one piece to simplify the assembly process. </div>

I always seem to have several projects on the go at various stages of construction...heres some evidence. I've started constructing another brass NSWGR Z19, the chassis is an etch but the rest needs to be scratchbuilt, which is fairly straightforward. </div>

Wheels are Fleischmann and are seen below getting treatment on my lathe.</div>

The wheels are turned down on their face (to thin them down to a finer thickness) and on their flange (to make them look smaller). Here all that needs to be done to finish this wheel is to use a razor blade to slice off the excess plastic that has flared up in the turning process. </div>

So it never really ran well.....</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">A couple of months ago I decided it was time to do something for a model, that potentially had a new lease of life left in it. So I started to go about designing how it would go together. Marked out some brass, drilled the chassis, soldered it all together, installed the motor and put the gears in, quartered the wheels, made some pickups and now she's a goer....</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Just need to clean up the bodywork and prepare a better paint job. </div><br />

</div><div class="p1" style="text-align: left;">I began construction by cutting out thick styrene (perhaps 2mm) for the floor, and cut some clapboard siding for the walls. Using my Tamiya thin Cement to glue (this is the best I have ever used) the box began to take shape quickly.</div><div class="p2" style="text-align: left;"><br />

<div class="p1">For the windows I quickly decided on an effective method of construction, not wanting to muck around with bits of styrene and glue going everywhere, and resulting in a mess that wouldn't hold together I opted for brass and a jig. </div><div class="p2"><br />
</div><div class="p1">Taking a pluck of Pine I glued a sheet of the side elevation plan on with PVA and scribed the lines that form the window frame. In these recesses the fine brass rectangular shaped wire was slotted in and held down for soldering. Carrs Red Flux was used to get a good joint, with minimal heat and solder being applied. </div><div class="p2"><br />

The soldered lattice of framework was removed following soldering and trimmed to size with some small scissors. Trimming was done so that the frame would fit snugly in behind the outer styrene trim used for the window frame extremities.<br />
